Bonding with Marocol adhesives
What does ′open time′ mean?
The open time stated on a Technical Data Sheet refers to the period of time between the start of the application of the adhesive and the moment when the press must be closed. The open time is influenced by temperature and relative humidity, which can accelerate or delay the process. Because these factors influence the open time, the pressing time is also affected! Air circulation should also be avoided, as this drastically reduces the open time.
What does ′pressing time′ mean?
Pressing time refers to the period during which the press must remain closed. Once this period has expired, the panel can be lifted using a vacuum method. At that moment, the shear strength and tensile strength are high enough for further processing of the panel. Be advised that the curing process of the adhesive is not yet complete; the panels must be stored horizontally.
How important is the mixing ratio?
The mixing ratio has been calculated by Bostik and should always be observed. Adding smaller or larger quantities of hardener does not accelerate or delay the process. If the correct mixing ratio is not observed, the adhesive may not fully cure.
What does ′pot life′ mean?
'Pot life' refers to the period of time until the adhesive has reached such a high viscosity that it can no longer be applied. Note: pot life is indicated per 100 grams; because the reaction is exothermic, a larger quantity will have a shorter pot life. It is therefore advisable to pour the adhesive onto the relatively colder surface immediately after mixing. Pot life also depends on temperature. We recommend storing and/or applying the adhesive at room temperature.
What causes blistering in panels?
Blistering can have several different causes. Contact our specialists in this field for further information.
How much pressure should I use during the pressing process?
The correct pressure is indicated on the Technical Data Sheet. As a rule of thumb, high pressure is best for the quality of the adhesive bond. However, high pressure will affect the visual appearance of the panels. Using less pressure will improve the visual appearance of the panels, but will increase the risk of blistering as a result of dimensional tolerances.
How should I apply Marocol adhesives?
Depending on the viscosity, the adhesive can be applied using a spatula or (paint) roller. It is also possible to use fully automated application equipment.
